Why You Should Ditch Your Electronic Calendar

Electronic calendars, like the one that you have that syncs between your mail and your phone and your desktop, are overrated. I know that electronic calendars were supposed to be the greatest organizational tools ever invented and they were supposed to help us stay organized up to the minute but there is still something to be said for using a day planner or a pen and a notebook to keep track of your day.

And science will back me up on this. There is plenty of evidence that using a paper and pen to plan your day and keep track of your appointments is better for you mentally and it will help you remember your appointments. You Can Always Access It

If you’re not depending on an electronic calendar then it doesn’t matter if you’re in an area with no cell phone reception or if your battery is almost dead. You can check your paper planner anywhere without any special batteries or other equipment. When it comes to practicality and easy access there is no substitute for a traditional paper planner or daybook.

You Can Customize It

When you use an electronic calendar you just input the data and that’s that. But when you use a paper planner you can customize it to make it more unique and relevant to you. You can use a coding system using graphics or stickers. Or you might use different color inks to represent different clients or appointments. You can add and subtract columns or make notes to yourself in the margins. A paper planner is a one stop information shop about your day that you can reference whenever you need it. And you can make notes quickly without having to pull out your phone and wait for a wifi signal wherever you are. You can even decorate if you want to with artwork, fancy paper, stickers, paint, or other things.

Writing Things Down Makes Them Easier To Remember

There is some science to back up the idea that when you write something down you are more likely to remember it. So while you might want to still put alerts on your phone to remind you when you have a meeting writing down that meeting time and who you are meeting with and why on a piece of paper will help you stop missing appointments.

Try using a paper planner for a week instead of your electronic calendar and you will be amazed at the difference that it makes. Once I tried using an old fashioned day planner that I customized with my own information and layout I realized I’d never use an electronic calendar again.
